Scientists have released information related to a new study which links a high meat diet to Alzheimer’s and accelerated aging. The study indicates that grilled, barbecued or fried meat may be the cause of the disease.
They have discovered that harmful compounds in this ‘Western diet’ cause a protein build-up that results in toxic deposits which attack the brain. The research done has found that the increased level of the compounds hold back the protective enzyme found in conditions linked to aging, diabetes and metabolic disease. It has also been found that foods high in fats and sugars, such as cakes, biscuits, eggs and cheese play a large role in the condition known as Alzheimer’s by increasing the levels of the Ages compound.
Alzheimer Research UK’s Dr Simon Ridley has stated that an increased risk of dementia has previously been linked to diabetes. The results of this study have provided a fresh view of the potential molecular processes that could link diabetes and Alzheimer’s. According to Dr Ridley a healthy lifestyle could lower the risks of dementia. Maintaining a healthy, balanced diet, regular exercise, maintaining a normal weight and keeping your blood pressure at the desired level could all contribute to lowering the risk of Alzheimer’s.
On the other hand, academics have stated that the link between meat and dementia is ‘compelling’, but it does not offer clear answers to the problem. Cures for Alzheimer’s have always been a hope for the future and any effort to control or prevent it is very important.
The results of the study and the study in itself should be viewed as encouraging, instead of looking for definitive answers to the problem.
